"To your humanity. That's where I want to go. That's where I connect. Right there. So much goodness in the truth of all that has been lived and seen and done by you, exists right there. It's where the façade is stripped away and the raw, rich essence of you lies. And it's the very truest place to be."
— Dr. Lily Zehner, LMFT
"In the end, what matters is who did I love, how did I love, and was I loved?"
— Alua Arthur

A guide for the
journey ahead

Hi, I'm Dr. Lily Zehner, LMFT — the heart of To Your Humanity, end-of-life and death doula care.

I help fellow humans navigate their death: to lift the veil, explore their relationship to it, and understand what they need.

With my own humanity, compassion, and curiosity, I'll sit beside you as you discover your truth.

Dr. Lily Zehner

I began my work as a Sex & Relationship Therapist in Denver over twelve years ago. Over time, I kept seeing the same intersection emerge — sex, life, pleasure, and death. Death showed up in all its forms: not just physical, but erotic, emotional, and spiritual. I was holding it all, and I needed to understand how it was connected.

Two and a half years ago, I completed the transformative training to become a Death Doula with Alua Arthur and Going with Grace. Since then, I've immersed myself in the world of death — learning by doing, by practicing, by sitting with it. Because knowing about death cognitively is one thing. Witnessing a life end — and all that comes before, with, and after — is another knowing entirely.

I've volunteered as a vigil sitter in the final days, hours, and minutes of a person's life. To hold their hand. To encourage them through their laboring out. To feel the sacred energy shift in the room after someone takes their last breath — that is always humbling. I've sat with all kinds of death, from the natural and expected to the incredibly tragic. And through all of it, one truth has held: every life was worthy and important.

I am, quite simply, a moth to a flame when it comes to human truth. It's why I do this work. Ask someone about death or sex and the facades fall away — the armor, the layers, the barriers to real connection. What's left is pure humanity. That's where I want to be.

I do this work because when life gets messy, scary, and uncomfortable — when others look away because it's too much — I will not look away. I will be right there with you.

Finally, I do this work because everyone will die. And I would be honored to be there with you.
"When life gets messy, scary, unclear, uncomfortable, when others turn away from it because it's too much, I will not look away, I will be right there with you."
— Dr. Lily Zehner, LMFT
